Imbued with a journalistic ethos, and brandishing a magazine aesthetic, the first edition of “Food Stories – A Cookbook for A Cause” is a hybrid, compilation cookbook that monographs the food-provenance of 21 remarkable chefs working in British Columbia today.

The chefs’ most private, poignant memories have manifested as heartfelt, nourishing recipes meant to be shared together – conjuring a homegrown chronicle where all’s laid bare.

Curated, authored & photographed by The Curatorialist helmer Hakan Burcuoğlu, “Food Stories” is a labour of love that promises to deliver a brand of singularity absent in food literature today. The chefs featured in “Food Stories” have been interviewed in the privacy of their own homes, and candidly photographed during their everyday routine over four months – all coalescing into a seamless design that boasts poignant story, sentient imagery, and eclectic recipes.

The collection of unique personalities featured in “Food Stories” led us to the idea of constructing a flexible design system reflecting the variety: We collated a color palette and a display typeface palette, and used a combination of them for each chef’s story.

WORDS FROM
HAKAN BURCUOĞLU, PROJECT CREATOR OF THE BOOK

Published as a charitable cookbook in 2019, “Food Stories – A Cookbook for a Cause” monographs the food provenance of 21 remarkable chefs who reside in Vancouver, Canada. From its inception, the challenge behind Food Stories was to create a 200-page canvas that brought together poignant stories and food recipes in the aesthetic of a quarterly journal. A boutique production at heart, “Food Stories” was designed by Fevkalade remotely, and with lightning speed — under 4 months. I am grateful to Emre and Cem for their dedication in bringing this labor of love to life.

We believe in a rational design process where decisions are based on objective reasons that emerge from the project brief and that can be articulated in meaningful and productive discussions.
