Communicating Science is a series of events at Sabancı University where we work on communicating scientists’ research to people outside of their field.

The event is not limited to visual information design: The global information architecture of the posters, and many of the explanatory texts were created from scratch through a collaborative process between us and the scientists, after brainstorms involving many researchers and students from diverse disciplines.

The sketches made at the event guide us in our later efforts for turning these discussions into single posters and videos including motion graphics.

The posters and the videos are designed to have an increasing level of depth: They start with a general introduction to the subject which both contextualizes the research at hand and provides a point of entry for outsiders. They then explain what the researchers aim to do, and finally present their results with some of their supporting data. This narrative structure allows anyone to engage with the research problem at the level of their own choosing.

Researchers benefit from this work in different ways: in addition to having these posters/videos as ready communication tools at hand, they also use some of the graphics separately in their papers and presentations. Many of them also say they gain valuable insights as to how to think about and present their research during the workshops and the subsequent information design processes.

Visual communication design is usually associated with the culture-art world on one side, and the business-marketing world on the other – young visual designers may even feel like these are their only options for their careers. “Communicating Science” is a good example showing designers can use their skills and create value in every discipline.

We believe in a rational design process where decisions are based on objective reasons that emerge from the project brief and that can be articulated in meaningful and productive discussions.
